MACHINE TOPOLOGY :

Modified 'Half-Wave' Tesla Coil -- The classical horizontal half-wave secondary coilform is split into two equal portions, and re-arranged into two identical vertical tower coilforms.  The midpoint of the secondary system is connected to a massive Earth grounding array, thereby canceling the Earth currents to first order. Coil coupling coefficients in the CD2 are substantially higher than in the CD1 and most classical designs, in order to implement energy recovery using the new solid-state primary switching arrays.

Each physical tower structure supports one secondary coil section, an independent primary drive coil, equipotential strike rings and the toroidal top electrode.

The base support structure of the south tower rides on a greased sliding rail system embedded in the concrete of the foundation. The north tower, which houses the visitor's center and control station, is permanently anchored.  A motorized acme screw drive adjusts the distance between the towers to achieve optimum performance. The center-to-center separation of the towers is variable from about 220 feet to 300 feet.
